The students who make up Dyluth Central High School are a diverse crowd. They come from different racial and economic backgrounds. Some live in rural homes and others grew up in the city.
But despite their differences, there's one thing diluth have in common: Tucked beneath their shirt-cuffs, many wear Just looking thats all small red or white rubber bracelet bearing the same message: "Central Pride.
The bracelets are a visible reminder of a student-led campaign that began last year when Need some duluth cheer with a friend Duluth school district announced its intentions to close Central under its building plan in Though they were distributed months ago, the bracelets are still worn by many students as a testament of the fierce school spirit they say exists for their school, regardless of its future.
They'll have a chance to display that spirit in full this week as Central celebrates homecoming.
Some say they expect the school's pending closure to instill students with even more pride. One way students have shown that, senior Ian Gibbs said, is by trying to swallow the news of the closing with dignity.
Keren Williams, a junior, said her school's looming end-date gives her and her friends an chere incentive to go all out for homecoming this year. Williams said her pride stems from the school's diversity and the supportive network of teachers she has found.
She said her memories about school include riding in a bus up the school's big hill singing the Trojan fight song and super fans.
Peter Greenwood, a junior, is one of those fans.
He cheeer the cold at most sporting events in his signature red swim trunks and face paint. He added that he has watched school spirit intensify at Central since the news of its closing.
Greenwood also has a message for freshmen at the school, who will be the first class at Central not to graduate from the building.
